Project Focus: Pros and Cons of Enterprise Resource Planning as an Interdisciplinary Infrastructure
What is an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning System):
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) refers to a type of software that organizations use to manage day-to-day business activities such as accounting, procurement, project management, risk management and compliance, and supply chain operations.
ERP systems tie together a multitude of business processes and enable the flow of data between them. By collecting an organization’s shared transactional data from multiple sources, ERP systems eliminate data duplication and provide data integrity with a single source of truth.

Project Objective and Motivation:
The objective of this project is to critically examine enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems as interdisciplinary socio-technical infrastructures that shape how labor moves across an organization. I will be using Avista Corporation's currently ongoing company-wide ERP implementation as a case study. This project aims to analyze how a single technological system mediates interactions among multiple business functions and how it affects and alters the day-to-day experiences of employees, as well as its long-term impacts on customers. The current plan is to combine observations and semi-structured interviews to gather data on quantitative metrics and qualitative expectations and reservations across the company. Essentially, I would like to see whether this creates a bridge between disciplines in the corporate world or if it is just a short-term fix that will eventually lead to new silos. Additionally, I hope this specific analysis will serve as a stepping stone to scope out and make arguments for or against other ERP systems and recent technological shifts in corporations. My main motivation for choosing this project is that I currently have an offer to work as a project coordinator in the ERP implementation efforts at Avista, and I would like to have more knowledge and understanding of the project while also observing if it is something that will makes a difference.
